Boutique hotels in Menorca: town-centre palaces and country estates with just a few rooms
What sets a boutique hotel apart from any other hotel? In Menorca the answer almost always lies in the building: an eighteenth-century mansion in the centre of Mahón, a former consulate, a village grocer’s shop, a family pastry shop a stone’s throw from Ciutadella cathedral, or a marès finca surrounded by hundreds of hectares of countryside. Rooms are few, from six to around thirty, and no two are alike. Of the ten boutique hotels in Menorca in this selection, five have five stars and five have four: three are in Mahón, one in the old town of Ciutadella, one in Alaior and one in Ferreries, and four are country estates, spread between Ferreries, Alaior, Ciutadella and Sant Lluís.

For each one we tell you the story of the house, how many rooms there are, where to eat and what’s nearby. In town you get around on foot, and in the evening you dine in the narrow streets; in the countryside you need a car, but you get a pool, a kitchen garden and silence. If you haven’t yet decided which of the two towns suits you, read our guide to choosing the best place to stay in Menorca. You’ll find more places with character among our unique hotels in Menorca.

Every room has air conditioning, a safe and an iPad, and some look out over the rooftops of the town.
There’s a garden with a narrow pool, open in the warmer months, and in the patio the restaurant, La Cocina de Cristine, serves Mediterranean and Spanish dishes; for an aperitif there’s the bar. There’s also a gym and bikes to hire, and a paid shuttle runs to the airport, 6 km away.

The fourteen rooms and suites are spread over three floors, with high ceilings and original beams, and some have a private patio or terrace.
There’s no restaurant, but breakfast with island produce is served in the large shady courtyard, and the lounge has an honesty bar where you help yourself. The best spot is the roof terrace, with views over the bell towers and the bay. The port is a few minutes’ walk away, the airport less than 5 km, and Es Grau beach a quarter of an hour by car.

It has been a hotel since 2009 and in recent years has expanded into the house next door: today there are twelve rooms, including doubles, suites, family rooms and two small apartments, all simple, with exposed sandstone, ceiling fans and natural materials.
Breakfast is made with seasonal local produce and is open to neighbours too, who drop in for a coffee or for brunch. At the back there’s a small garden with a compact pool, and at the top of the house the terrace with views over the rooftops of the village. In summer the hotel puts on open-air cinema and small concerts; Ferreries lies halfway between Mahón and Ciutadella, which makes it a handy base for exploring the island.

8. Hotel Boutique Can Sastre: a family pastry shop a hundred metres from Ciutadella cathedral

The rooms have a flat-screen TV, a kettle and views over the town; the Sant Jeroni suite has a terrace.
The buffet breakfast is served beneath a marès vault, and at lunchtime the hotel offers locally sourced dishes made with vegetables from its own garden. A hotel since 2020, it has six bright rooms, with air conditioning, a minibar and a bathroom with a shower; the Double Penthouse has a private terrace looking onto the bell tower.
Breakfast with local produce is served in the breakfast room or in the patio. The house uses solar panels and collects rainwater, and unlike many hotels on the island it stays open all year round. Town or countryside: how to choose your boutique hotel
If you want to go out on foot in the evening, choose the town: in Mahón, Cristine Bedfor, with its garden and pool, Can Alberti 1740, with its roof terrace, or El Consul, the smallest; in Ciutadella, Can Sastre, which is adults only. Ferreries and Alaior, with Ses Sucreres and Encant de Alaior, are quiet towns halfway between the two. If you’re after space and a pool, look at the estates: Torre Vella and Son Ermità for the paths down to the sea, Son Vell for its two restaurants and horse rides, Alcaufar Vell for the sea just two kilometres away. In the countryside a car is essential: it’s worth picking one up as soon as you land at Menorca Airport, and our Menorca car hire guide explains how to choose. Other well-known boutique hotels, such as Jardí de Ses Bruixes in Mahón, Faustino in Ciutadella and Bordoy Casa Ládico, are in our selection of spa hotels in Menorca.

One thing to know before you pick your dates: the country estates follow the season, and Torre Vella, for example, closes from November to March; in the towns, on the other hand, some places stay open, such as Encant de Alaior, which operates all year round.
