Cheap hotels in Menorca: hostals, hostels and small hotels in Ciutadella, Mahón and Ferreries

The part of Menorca where a night costs least is almost always the old town of Ciutadella: between the cathedral and the harbour there are family-run hostals, restored townhouses with just a few rooms and two hostels. Next comes Ferreries, the inland village halfway between the two towns, and then the lanes of Mahón. The ten cheap hotels in Menorca in this selection are six in Ciutadella, two in Ferreries, one in Mahón and one by the sea, in Binibeca: one- and two-star hostals, small unrated hotels, two hostels and two three-star hotels with a pool.

1. Es Mirador Boutique Hotel: eight rooms a hundred metres from Ciutadella cathedral

Es Mirador Boutique Hotel occupies a yellow house with green shutters on Carrer d’es Mirador, in the old town of Ciutadella, a hundred metres from the cathedral and half a kilometre from the harbour. It has eight rooms with air conditioning, a TV and a shower room; some keep the wooden ceiling beams, and the staircase with its iron banister belongs to the original house.

At the top there is a terrace with tables and a shade sail, looking out over the rooftops. It is a small hotel without extras: reception keeps limited hours, there is no parking and the whole building is non-smoking. A paid transfer can be booked from the airport, 45 km away.

In short: eight rooms in an old-town house, rooftop terrace, a short walk to the cathedral and the harbour, no parking.

In the morning a continental breakfast is served in the shared lounge, and at the entrance there is a green patio full of plants. There is a lift, and the whole property is non-smoking. On the ground floor are the restaurant, serving home cooking at modest prices, and the café-bar with a set menu of the day, also open to non-residents. It is run by a group of young travellers, and it shows: there is a shared kitchen for making your own meals and a lounge for the evenings. Today’s building, three floors on Plaça Espanya, dates from 2006, and the couple’s children run it. It is a three-star hotel open all year, with soundproofed rooms and apartments.

There are two pools: an indoor heated one on the ground floor, for the colder months, and an outdoor one on the top-floor terrace, with a hot tub and views of the hills. Guests have a shared kitchen, a terrace, a laundry and a bike store; breakfast is not included, and parking is free in the surrounding streets. It makes a good base without a car: nearby are the bus stops for the coves of the west and south-west coast, such as Macarella and Turqueta.

Where to stay in Menorca on a budget: town, village or sea

Without a car, Ciutadella is the best choice: six of the places on this list are there, everything is within walking distance and buses to the coves leave from the town. Mahón, with Hostal La Isla, suits travellers arriving by plane or ferry who want the airport a few minutes away. Ferreries, with Noualt and Loar, sits halfway between the two towns, and from there a short drive takes you to the north coast or the southern coves. A sea view at this price is only on offer in Binibeca. If you want to get around freely, our car hire deals in Menorca will help you choose, and for the journey there are the direct flights to Menorca from the UK.

Before you book, check carefully what is included: in these hotels breakfast, parking and a night reception are sometimes there and sometimes not, and that is exactly where the price gap with a three-star hotel by the sea comes from.
